API Plan 53A
API Plan 53A is typically used in applications where an effective, maintained means to isolate the process fluid from the atmosphere exists through the use of a barrier liquid under pressure. This configuration is ideal for use with pumps that transport hazardous, toxic, and/or environmentally sensitive fluids, and where controlled leakage is vital to the operation of these processes.
For petrochemical and refining applications, Plan 53A is used on pumps that are circulating highly reactive and/or volatile materials. The use of an accumulator-based means of pressurization supports the overall well-being of the barrier fluid at all times, as opposed to fluctuating between high and low pressure conditions during times of variation in the process load. As a result, it is suitable for use in chemical reactors, transfer pumps, and hydrogenation unit applications that demand extreme operating conditions.
API Plan 53A is also used in pharmaceutical and specialty chemical production because maintaining product purity and protecting the environment are critical requirements for these processes. The pressurized isolation fluid reduces the chance that process fluids will come into contact with other fluids, both internal and external, thus complying with all of the stringent regulatory and safety requirements of these industries.
API Plan 53A is selected in facilities where there is access to a nitrogen supply and the need for maximum process stability and minimal manual operation changes.
