Applications of slurry mechanical seals:
As slurry are commonly used to transport ore, tailings and grinding media, the mechanical seals in these pumps are selected for their ability to withstand high hardness particles, sand and other mineral fines.
When transporting slurries containing coal fines, ash and other impurities, mechanical seals play a key role in assuring continuous pump operation during extended period of time. The reliability of a mechanical seal in these applications provides the user with the confidence that they will not experience leakage.
Slurries that transport steel and non-ferrous metals are extremely abrasive and require the use of mechanical seals manufactured from hard materials (e.g. silicon carbide or tungsten carbide) as well as flushing systems designed to protect against wear.
When transporting slurries containing corrosive crystalline materials (i.e., phosphates, chlorides, titanium dioxide), mechanical seals need to be manufactured from corrosion-resistant alloys and elastomers in order to prevent chemical deterioration and/or clogging due to crystallization.
Sludge pumps and grit chamber agitators frequently come into contact with fibrous materials, sand and other debris. Mechanical seals for slurry pumps have been designed with clogging resistant features to allow for small solid particles to pass through them.
