The two most common sealing principles used in rotating equipment are single and double mechanical seals. These seals are best suited to specific operating conditions. Single mechanical seals are used when an application requires standard service and the process medium is relatively stable at moderate operating parameters. The single mechanical seal is most often used when the application requires only moderate leakage control or protection from mechanical seal face damage. The double mechanical seal is used when an application requires additional leakage control or protection of the seal face from the process medium.

Secured & Controlled Leakages

The two separate sealing sides are secures from the outside atmosphere while at the same time it allows for controlled leak path to improve the gas or liquid flow to prevent any direct exposure of the process liquid to air.

Protect Your Sealed Surface

Having an intermediate fluid or gas in the space between the two sealed faces provides some protection to your sealed surface, as it provides an insulating barrier from the process fluid, thus limiting how much wear is created on the sealed face due to contaminants entering the sealing area or thermal shock.

Larger Range of Operating Conditions

A double acting mechanical seal allows for a broader array of operational options than a single mechanical seal, including the use of pressurized and unpressurized barrier or buffer systems.

Application Scenarios

Single and Double Mechanical Seals can be used in many different applications, but most commonly, they are used for applications that require control over process stability and leakage, and/or protective measures against any undesirable or hazardous product leaking into the environment.

Double Seals provide a second sealing point, and an intermediate chamber between the two sealing points, allowing for significantly better control over the sealing environment than with a single seal configuration.

Common applications for Double Mechanical Seals include:

  • Centrifugal pumps transferring a wide range of industrial liquids, where potential leaks to the atmosphere must either be reduced or monitored by the appropriate Regulatory Agencies.
  • Chemical process pumps transferring weakly corrosive, and/or temperature-sensitive products where the seal faces are subject to potential damage from the fluid being pumped.
  • Applications that require fluid to circulate as a Buffer/Barrier fluid, to improve heat dissipation from the sealing surface, and enhance seal performance.
  • Applications in which a single mechanical seal could not accommodate a wide range of pressure and/or temperature fluctuations.

Most users will compare the required performance of Single Mechanical Seals and the required performance of Double Mechanical Seals based on the Maximum Operating Pressure for each type, and the characteristics of the fluids being pumped through each type of seal, as well as any other Safety Requirements, rather than comparing the cost of each.
